Carriage bolts are designed to fasten a wooden face to either wood or metal

The self-locking square section on the underside of the head pulls into the wooden material as hex nuts are tightened, eliminating spinning after installation

Good Bolts and Bad Picking
Good news, these carriage bolts are fully threaded bolts. Making them extra useful when you want to shorten a 6 inch long bolt for use in a tight spot. Bad news, the carriage bolts that Lowe's packed for store pickup (in a locker) were mostly the correct size. Sadly, two of the 16 bolts I asked for (paid for) were not the correct size bolts. Order fulfillment employee at Lowe's made the error when picking 16 bolts from the hardware aisle. Oh well.
