Learn MoreCrimson Red is a heavy producer and one of the best-tasting rhubarbs around. You'll enjoy abundant yields of plump, red stalks that grow 24 in. tall and have a sweet, yet pleasingly tart flavor. To plant, select a site with soil that is well drained, rich, loamy and fortified with compost or well-rotted manure. Plant divisions 3 to 4 inches deep and 4 feet apart. Wait until the second season to harvest. Be aware that rhubarb leaves are poisonous. Hardy in USDA zones 3 to 8.

Poor Quality Bare Root
I've purchased many plants in the past from other sources shipped as a bare root with great success. The crimson red rhubarb bare root purchased early this spring from Lowe's looked rotted without any indication of the potential for sprouting buds. I planted it anyway to give it a chance. Three months later, still nothing. After digging up the root, found it was definitely rotted and no budding taking place at all. Very disappointed to lose an entire year and will need to seek another source for...

It never grew
Planted it and waited all summer, watering it with the rest of my garden. While the rest of the garden grew, the rhubarb never even sprouted. Very disappointed!
