These screws SUCK 2x materials together like a vacuum! The upper non-threaded portion is perfect for sucking two 2x4s together. Before I got these, I was using some older screws that were threaded most of the way up to the head. Even with predrilling, those old screws just WOULD NOT pull the 2-by's together tightly. I was glueing and screwing, but the glue won't bond well if the boards aren't squeezed together tightly, and the old screws just wouldn't do it. I ended up using a sledgehammer ...
