How to Grow Plants in Strawberry Jars

First, place a layer of gravel or small stones at the bottom of the jar to allow the plants to absorb water. This is very important since it helps avoid root rot.

Next, fill the jar with a good-quality potting mix. The mix needs to be packed tightly from below. A well-draining mix with some moisture retention can be used since most seeds require unique pots containing something akin to soil. When putting the soil into the jar, do it gently. This will help squash any air in the jar, but do not press hard.

Before planting, prepare the soil by tilling it and adding well-decomposed manure or compost. Start by planting in the pot at the bottom of the jar openings. Tilt the jar slightly to make planting easier. Place each plant into a pocket, ensuring the roots are covered with soil. After filling the bottom pockets, add soil and repeat for the next layer. Finally, plant one or two more at the top.

After planting, water the jar. Use a watering can with a gentle nozzle to ensure the soil is evenly moist but not soggy. Regular watering is crucial, especially during hot weather, as the small pockets can dry out quickly. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid overwatering.

Organic fertilizers are effective when used in a slow-release manner when planting in a strawberry pot. They can be incorporated into the soil during planting or used on the soil's surface. This will help the plants obtain what they require for growth and fruit-bearing.

Proper care is needed for the plants to bloom well in containers. Soil moisture should be monitored, particularly in the side pockets. If you realize that the soil is drying quickly, you may add a layer of mulch to cover the soil to conserve moisture. Also, remove dead leaves and runners, so as not to hamper the plant's healthy growth.
