Accessible Lighting Solutions
It’s not necessary to completely redesign a home’s lighting scheme to increase and balance consistency of light. Consistent light reduces glare and decreases shadows, as well as increases flexibility, focus and security. The following ideas are ways to provide more consistent light.
Ambient Lighting
Ambient lighting, such as overhead lighting, can help eliminate shadows and reduce glare. Floor lamps that aim light toward the ceiling, such as torchiere lamps, are an easy way to mimic overhead lighting.
Recessed Lighting
Recessed lights are unobtrusive lights that you can install where existing fixtures already are. Place recessed lights on a dimmer switch to adjust brightness as needed.
Track Lighting
These lights add focus and flexibility by allowing you to aim light where you need it. You can also direct track light heads away from glass surfaces to reduce glare.
Under Cabinet Lighting
Under cabinet lights are an inconspicuous source of kitchen illumination for those with weakened eyesight.
Task Lighting
Task lights supplement overhead, indirect lighting when you need additional light for hobbies, reading or other tasks that require concentration. Lamps on one or both sides of the activity are an easy way to add task lighting. Move the shade below eye level to reduce glare.
Wall Fixtures
Fixtures, such as sconces, help light stairways, hallways and entryways. Wall sconces on both sides of the bathroom mirror reduce shadows.
Security Lighting
These lights provide safety and a sense of well-being. Indoor and outdoor motion sensors, such as automatic on/off night lights in bedrooms, bathrooms and hallways, can increase safety. Outdoor lighting, including path lights, deck lights and stair lights, help too.
Natural Lighting
Skylights and tubular lights are a great way to bring natural light into your home.
Light Bulbs and Switches
Studies indicate that, as we age, we require up to three times more light to see. But it’s not as simple as switching to a higher-watt bulb. These types of light bulbs and switches can help make lighting your home easier.
Energy-Efficient LED Bulbs
These bulbs save on energy costs and can last up to 20 years or more. They fit standard light sockets, and you can use them practically anywhere in the home.
Rocker or Toggle Switches
These switches make it easier for people with limited hand strength or dexterity to switch lights on and off.
Dimmer Switches
Dimmer switches with knob or touch-sensitive controls allow you to adjust light levels. Mount switches 36 inches to 44 inches from the floor for easy reach.
