How to Install a Dish Soap Dispenser

You can tackle this DIY-friendly project in just a few steps. Before you get started, make sure your sink is empty and nearby countertops are clear so that you have an open workspace. You’ll also want to clear out any items underneath your sink since you’ll have to do some of the installation work there, too.

If you don’t have a predrilled hole in the sink, then drilling the hole will be your first step. Refer to your countertop soap dispenser’s instructions to determine the correct size hole to drill.

It’s important to position the dish soap dispenser properly if you’re drilling the hole yourself. The ideal position is 7 to 8 inches from your faucet. The goal is to create a comfortable space to wash your hands without the dispenser getting in the way. Before you drill the hole, position a disposable soap dispenser in different locations to determine the best positioning for your sink layout.

If your sink already has a hole for a soap dispenser, remove the cover. Use pliers to unscrew the mounting clamp that secures the cover in place. You can find this clamp on the underside of the cover underneath your sink.

Tip

You may not be able to drill through some sinks depending on the material. Other materials may require a specialized drill accessory. Drilling may affect your sink warranty. As an alternative, you may be able to drill through the countertop.

Insert the pump and straw into the hole in your kitchen sink or countertop. Make sure that the pump is centered on the hole. Once the pump is positioned properly, add a foam or rubber washer to secure the pump to the hole and close any gaps.

Tip

Plumbers putty can help seal the hole to ensure water doesn’t leak into it. You can use it instead of or along with the washer to create a watertight seal.

Under-the-sink soap dispensers come in a variety of styles. As you shop for dish soap dispensers, consider both the look of the dispenser and its finish. These dispensers are available in several finishes, including stainless steel, chrome, brass and oil-rubbed bronze, making it easy to find one that coordinates with your kitchen faucet.
