How to Install a DIY Truck Bed Liner

Wash the truck liner using warm water, a car exterior cleaner and a sponge. Make sure the surface is completely dry before proceeding.

Sand away the paint and wax from the truck using a sanding block. (One may or may not be included with your kit; check the packaging to be sure.) You’ll want to make sure any surface the truck bed liner is free of any coating so that it will adhere properly.

Using painters tape and craft paper, cover any areas of the truck bed that you don’t want to apply the liner to.

In most cases, a liner kit will include packets of materials that must be combined to activate them. Mix all materials according to the manufacturer’s instructions. You may have to wait a certain length of time before applying the product to the truck bed. You’ll also have a limited amount of time to apply the liner material before it dries. Plan ahead to make sure you can finish the project in a single session.

Apply the first coat of liner coating according to the manufacturer’s instructions using the recommended tool, such as a paint brush. Begin by applying the coating toward the front (cab) of the truck and working your way toward the tailgate so you don’t have to step on a surface that has already been coated with the liner product. The manufacturer may recommend using dabbing motions rather than brushing motions for the first coat.

Typically, you’ll have to apply a second coating of liner material after waiting a certain amount of time for the first coat to partially or completely dry. To have enough product for this additional coat, you may need to buy two packages total. Although one box of product may coat the entire truck bed, it may take a second coat to ensure maximum protection. The manufacturer may also recommend a different application method for the second coat. For example, you may need to use a roller instead of a brush to ensure a smooth even surface. Allow the second coat to completely dry before driving your truck.
