How to Remove Mattress Odours
Here are some instructions on how to remove odors from mattresses.
Remove all the linen and covers off your mattress. Wash them in hot water with good laundry soap to eliminate any odor that may have been trapped. Make sure there is fresh air in the room either by opening the windows or using a fan.
Pour a thick layer of baking soda powder on top of the mattress beginning from the head of the bed. Baking soda is an all-natural sanitizer and is labeled to sufficiently inhibit bacterial growth and kill odor-causing germs. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes, but if the odor is strong leave, it on overnight.
The mattress needs to be vacuumed using a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment, paying particular attention to the surface of the mattress. This washes off dust, dirt, and any other substance that may help propagate the smell.
The upholstery attachment is different from other common vacuum attachments because it is ultra-light to prevent accidental wear on the mattress.
- How to Get the Smell of Urine Out of the Mattress
Prepare a mixture of 50 ml of warm water and white vinegar. Spray the area that has been infected and let it dry for 10-15 minutes. Sprinkle baking soda over the area to which vinegar has been applied and let it sit overnight. Clean the baking soda with a vacuum cleaner the next day. For stubborn stains, use a cleaner that breaks down proteins that are found in urine such as enzyme cleaner.
- How to Get the Smell of Smoke Out of the Mattress
Smoke smells are difficult to remove. Spread baking soda all over the mattress and leave it to act all night. After that, vacuum the baking soda and then spray the solution of white vinegar and water on the surface. The last step is to let the mattress dry out completely. Placing activated charcoal around the mattress is also a good idea when it comes to removing smoke smells.
- How to Get the Smell of Mildew Out of a Mattress
Make an equal solution of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and then spray it on the area very lightly. Allow it to remain for a period of approximately 10 minutes before you blot with a clean cloth. To make the treatment more effective, spread baking soda over the area that had been treated and then let it sit for the night before vacuuming. To avoid regrowth of mildew, make sure the mattress is thoroughly dry, then put it in a location where there is fresh air circulation.
Do not place any linen on the mattress until you are sure they are dry. When drying the item, use a fan or dehumidifier to help quicken the process. If possible, drag out the mattress and expose it to the sun for a few hours as it has a natural tendency to disinfect and remove bad odor.
Now that you know how to get a bad odor out of a mattress, follow this routine and address spills and accidents as soon as they happen.
