Before You Get Started

Put on covered shoes, long pants, a long-sleeve shirt, gloves, safety goggles and a mask. When working indoors or in an enclosed place, create ventilation by opening windows and doors or by using fans.

How to Remove Paint from Outside Bricks

Test the paint with a putty knife to determine its hardness.
If the paint is soft and easy to scrape off, use a putty knife to remove it.
If the paint is stubborn, try applying another layer of paint stripper to soften it before scraping.
Make sure to dispose of the paint appropriately.
Then, use a steel wool brush to remove the remaining paint.
Work in small sections and use mild pressure to prevent damaging the brick.
Repeat this process until all the paint is removed from the brick.

Caution

Remember to wear gloves and protective eyewear while working with steel wool.

Once all the paint has been removed, use a garden hose with a nozzle to rinse the bricks with warm water to remove any leftover paint or solution and let it dry completely.
Sealing a brick wall protects the surface from moisture, stains, and damage while maintaining its original look. Once the wall is completely dry, you can apply masonry sealer with a paintbrush.
After the sealer is dry, you can paint on a new color.

Tip

Use lead-free paint as it is safe for health and will not crack the brick.
