How to Change an Outdoor Light Fixture

Hold your new fixture up to the wall, aligning it so all screw holes match up. If your fixture comes with its own mounting, plate or bracket, screw that into the electrical box. If they are different, replace the old one with the new bracket provided. Tighten the screws with a screwdriver once your new bracket is installed and make sure the bracket is at level to ensure that your new light is not moving.

The next step is to connect the new wires to your home wiring. Carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions for connecting the wires and use wire nuts to secure them. You will find a black (hot), white (neutral), and green or bare copper (grounding) wire. Connect black to black, white to white, and the ground wire from your fixture to the green screw on the mounting bracket or to your home's ground wire. With the help of wire nuts, seal each connection and wrap them with electrical tape for extra protection.

Lastly, the final step is to insert a new light bulb. Turn the power back on from the electrical box and check your new outdoor light fixture. Make any necessary adjustments if required in the direction of the fixture.
