How to Build a Storage Ottoman

Build your dream diy storage ottoman by following this step-by-step guide.

The first step is to determine the height, width and depth of the ottoman that you want to build.
Below are the ideal sizes for the plywood:

Two panels 22 x 20.5 in. for the front and back of the ottoman
Two panels 22 x 22 in. for the sides of ottoman
One panel 22 x 22 in. for the bottom
One panel 22 x 22 in. for the lid

Based on the dimensions, clamp and cut the plywood pieces to the required size mentioned below with a circular saw.
Smooth the edges of the cut pieces using sandpaper to prevent splinters.

Apply a bead of wood glue to the seams where the sections of the ottoman will be joined.
With the use of a power drill, draw pilot holes in the plywood and screw around all four sides of the ottoman.
After creating the pilot holes, drill the wood screws in the holes to join the four sides of the panels into a box.
Turn the box over and drill in the screws to attach the bottom of the box.
Apply wood glue to the four corners of the braces.
Secure the corner braces by positioning them tightly against the inside corners of the ottoman.
Let the glue dry so the corner braces are fixed firmly.

Caution

Secure the workpiece using a vice or clamp to prevent it from moving while drilling.

Now that the box of the storage ottoman is formed, it is time to fix the cushion lid.
Choose upholstery fabric like leather or suede to build a storage ottoman lid that is durable and comfortable and adds to the look of the room.
Use a straight edge to measure the lid of your storage ottoman, ensuring you have enough fabric to cover it completely.
Leave 2 to 3 inches of fabric to hang over the edges.
Cut the fabric according to the measurements, making sure it is large enough to wrap around the lid comfortably.
Place a piece of poly foam on top of the lid, ensuring it covers the entire surface. The polyfoam will provide padding and insulation for the lid.
Begin stapling the fabric with the help of a staple gun to the underside of the lid, starting from the center and working your way towards the edges.

Caution

Always wear safety glasses when using a staple gun.

Attach the piano hinge to the bottom of the fabric-covered lid and the rear panel of the ottoman frame.
Drill pilot holes in both the lid and the frame to accommodate the screws that will secure the hinge.
Attach the bottom part of the piano hinge to the underside of the lid using the provided screws.
Ensure that the round part, or knuckle of the hinge, extends from the back of the ottoman. This will allow the lid to close flat and securely.
Attach the top part of the piano hinge to the rear panel of the ottoman frame, aligning it with the bottom part of the hinge. Secure the hinge in place using the provided screws.
