Hidden Storage: Under Stairs

Using a drywall saw, you'll cut out the drywall for the boxes. Before you cut, make sure there's no wiring or plumbing in the way.

Measure you space in order to draw up plans for the boxes. We've created 3 boxes with adjustable shelving. The boxes will get smaller as they go to match the descending staircase.

Build the boxes out of plywood. Attach them together with screws or nails.

Make sure to test fit as you go. The boxes need to snugly fit, but make sure they're not too tight. You can always add shims to make it fit better when you screw things together later.

Now that the boxes are built, drill holes for the adjustable shelving. Use shelf pins to indicate what size drill bit is needed. Use a piece of pegboard as a guide to draw the holes for your shelf pins. Drill only a quarter-inch into your side pieces.

Measure your boxes and cut your shelves to the right size. Test fit with the shelf pins to make sure they fit correctly.

Now it's time to paint the boxes and shelves. Make sure to paint all sides, including the back panel.

Put the boxes into place and ensure they're level. Attach them with screws into the studs.

Finish it up by adding trim around the outside edges.
