DIY Cat Window Perch

Take the basket that will be the base of your DIY cat window perch. Make sure it is not too deep. A narrow rectangular basket would be perfect for this project. If you don’t have one already, consider purchasing a narrow hyacinth basket. A hyacinth basket with cut-out handles would be a good choice.

Place the basket near the window. Decide the comfortable height to hang it. Take a measuring tape and note this height. Make sure that your cat can access the perch easily. Also, measure the length of the chain required to hang the basket. If the chain is too long, cut it short with a wire cutter. 

Clear away any dust on the window with a clean cloth as dust and grease can affect the adherence of suction cups. Spray a window cleaner around the spot where you plan to hang the perch. Wipe the window clean and let it air dry completely.

Check the basket for any rough edges. Line the basket with a soft fabric to cover the rough edges. Use fabric glue to secure this lining to the basket.

Use S-hooks of appropriate size to connect the chain to the basket. Insert one end of the hook into the basket handle. Insert the chain on the other end of the hook.

If your hyacinth basket does not have any handles, use a pointed tool like a screwdriver to make holes for S-hooks. If your basket is made of harder material, you might need to use a drill machine to make holes. Make sure that the holes are evenly spaced out to keep the perch balanced.

Opt for heavy-duty suction cups with hooks to support your cat’s weight. Make sure you place them exactly where the basket needs to be attached. You will need to place two suction cups for the basket and one to hang the chain above. You can use as many suction cups as required to hold the basket in place. Confirm their placement through the measurement you noted down in step 2.

Remove the cover from the suction cups. Turn the side with the hook towards yourself. Place the circular end of the suction cup on the window surface. Press the suction cups firmly to ensure a firm hold. Gently tug on the suction cups to confirm if they are attached properly.

Once the suction cups are secured in place, it's time to hang the basket. Bring the basket with the attached chain near the window. Hold the chain so the basket hangs evenly and stays stable. Hang the chain onto the hook of the top suction cup. Insert the hooks of the bottom suction cups into the hyacinth basket. This will secure it into place.

Place your hand in the basket and gently press it down. Check if the suction cups are holding the installation firmly. Observe the basket and confirm that it is not tilting on one side. Adjust the positioning of the cups or chain if needed.

You can do a lot to make this DIY cat window perch comfortable for your pet. Add a soft and lightweight blanket inside to make the space cozier. You can also place a lightweight pillow It will make the perch cozier and also help to keep the basket stable.
