How to Build a Garden Arbor
Building your own garden arbor means you'll get the exact size and style arbor you want and aren't limited to what's in stock. Choose the type of lumber, decorative finishes and paint or stain that matches your yard's aesthetic.
Before you dig postholes for the arbor, dial “One Call” for your state and ask to have the buried pipes and wires on your property located and marked. If you can’t find the number, call the North American One Call Referral System at 888-258-0808.
Go the Extra Mile with a Matching Outdoor Bench
Put your DIY skills to the test with a matching bench. For the bench shown here, you’ll assemble the bench with some of the same steps used to do the arbor, like boring holes for copper pipes. Detailed instructions are shown in the video and attached diagram.
Here is a list of materials you’ll need:
- 4 x 4 x 96 pressure-treated boards (x2)
- 1 x 4 x 144 pressure-treated board
- 2 x 2 x 96 pressure-treated board
- 3/4-in x 5-ft type M copper pipe, #23792
- 3-in deck screws
- 1-5/8-in deck screws
- Construction adhesive
If this seems beyond your DIY abilities, Lowe’s has a large selection of arbors and garden benches to choose from.
