This tractor was purchased May 15th 2026 with zero hours on the engine. After it was delivered I used it twice to mow the yard. This accrued 0.6 hours on the engine. At this point the tractor was turned off and garaged. The next time I attempted to use it the motor wouldn’t start. It would fire but wouldn’t kick over. Worst purchase I’ve ever made
Used it today for the first time the engine has a ticking sound the deck a loud rattling sound. Brand new mower should not be making these sound
Comfortable tractor-style mower
Just took delivery. I have only used it for one mowing session. My old mower had been broken for a while, so this mower had to take on six inches of growth which it did with ease. The tall grass was pretty wet and my lawn is hilly, but I had good traction except when trying to mow while turning sharply uphill. But the tires never ripped up my turf like the old mower's tires did. The mower did a B-plus job of a level mow even on such tall grass. I will give it a more fair test on my next mow. I'...

Slightly Disappointed
For over 50 years, I used competitor's mowers with relatively good success. However. I saw the S170 at Lowe's and like the heavy duty transmission aspect as well as the larger wheels. None of my other brand mowers in recent years have required greasing of the spindles and I had no problems. It doesn't concern me that S170 spindles require lubrication. What concerns me that that the grease cups are placed on the spindles in a position which makes lubing them cumbersome. Further, the spindles...

It's mow time!
Should have gone to the John Deere store
Should have went to the John Deere store. They would have delivered the mower a clean damage free mower to the house at no cost. Here is how buying the mower from Lowe's went. I picked out the mower with the help from a nice guy in the mower department. We went outside and looked over the mower for dents and scratches. We made sure that it started. Very Poorly Assembled
This unit would not drive after 4 hours of use. Started rattling, then wouldn't drive. Drive belt spindles were not tightened down from the factory and passed right through Lowe's quality check. Garbage unit. Sending back through Lowes so they can send one that is assembled correctly. I double-checked what I could when I received it, but everything seemed tight before I used it.
Great Value
This JD S170 so far has been great. Starts right up and the 24 hp V-twin runs very smooth and plenty of power. Although id never accuse it of being the most fuel-efficient engine, that's part of the program with a larger, more powerful engine. Besides mowing, it will be able to tow up to 500 lbs. after break-in, great for lawn roller and lawn cart. This machine replaced an older JD D105 that was getting long in the tooth. No issue with the product, issue with the seller
If I could give 0 stars, I would. Second delivery with Lowes and theyve managed to botch them both. The first one was missing things I paid for, and it was a bigger battle than it should have been to have the error corrected. The second error, the entire delivery has gone missing. Simply missing. No one at Lowes can tell me where my washer/dry and lawnmower are. Unbelievable.
Lowes and John Deere do not care
S170 48-in 24 -HP V-twin Gas Lawn tractor we bought this riding lawn mower on March 11 and it quit working on May 8th. Lowes asst manager Sheila lied and said they would replace. when this didn't happen we contacted corporate. they said John Deere will have to warranty and to call them. John Deere charged us 110.00 to pick up the mower. Now they tell us it will be 2 weeks before they even look at the mower.
