In the 1940s and 50s, more than a dozen competitors began selling other garbage disposal designs, but InSinkErator remained the industry leader. We introduced our signature Badger series in the 1960s, and today, there are still more Badger garbage disposals in kitchens all over the world than any other brand.

By the time we launched our high-performance Evolution line in the mid-2000s, we were a global company manufacturing millions of garbage disposals every year. We're still where we started, in John W. Hammes' hometown of Racine, Wisconsin, but now we're housed in a new state-of-the-art, LEED-designed headquarters and innovation center.

A garbage disposal grinds food waste so it can easily flow through a home's plumbing and into a septic tank. Once there, food scraps decompose faster than other waste sent into the tank. Because food scraps are 75% to 90% water, they add very little to the solids that settle at the bottom of the tank. Studies show that septic systems attached to a garbage disposal don't require more frequent pumping than those that aren't.

Reducing the amount of excess food purchased is the goal. As much as 55% of food purchases are unplanned, which leads to overpurchasing and spoilage. The temptation of saving on bulk purchases causes many families to purchase more food than they'll eat. In addition, a full 20% of at-home food waste is estimated to be caused by a lack of standardization of date labels, which leads consumers to throw away food before it's actually spoiled.
