High. Can I use an existing rain sensor wire to connect this or would I need to splice it?

Peter, any existing wire should be fine, as the rain sensor is technically just a switch. There are no connectors on the timer end, there are just two terminals for the rain sensor. As long as the existing wire(s) are of reasonable and functional size, they could be used in these terminals just as well.
