If I am installing a ceiling fan for an 11 ft ceiling how long should the down rod be thank you

A general guideline for improving airflow in the entire room or building would call for a 12" to 18" long downrod for an 11-foot ceiling. Depending on how the fan is intended to be used (cooling one spot or entire room or other), the downrod should be closer to the floor for more directed airflow and further from the floor to improve airflow for the entire room and/or building. The fan blades need to be at least 8 inches from the ceiling. For every inch further than that, there is a correlative decrease in overall airflow in the room, but there is also a correlative increase in airflow rate directly below the ceiling fan.
