what is the difference in the batteries?

You want the lithium ion it is the newest type out. Less maintenance and the battery will last longer unlike nicad battery's which if you run the low for a certain period of time will kill the battery and you will have to replace. Lithium if you don't use it much it will hold a charge for up to 12 months.

This drill/driver kit comes with a max 20 v 1.5 battery . The max 20v 3.0 will fit this drill, and give you up to , and more than twice the work time . Your charger will also fit that battery .
