Is the plastic cover on the solar square supposed to be removed, or does it stay in tact?


Remove the plastic cover before use.

The cover is removable by pressing in on the side to release the tab that holds it. The rechargeable batteries goes in the top cover.

Yes the thin plastic, shipping film does come off.

There is a protective plastic film place on it during shipping. it should come off very easy without prying or force.
