You will need to first install the batteries. To do that, remove the top and place them in the battery compartment. Then yes, you need to charge them in the sun for at least 24 hours.

Was this Answer Helpful ?one version has an on/off switch for the lights. Remove the protective plastic sheet, insert the rechargable batteries and put in the sun. Since the batteries are rechargable, you can replace them with new batteries when needed and you can charge them up on a standard AA household battery charger then you will be ready for your first nightime use.
