How far does it slide down over the 4x4?

There is about 1.25-in that will slide down over the 4x4 (actual 3.5x3.5). To secure to the post, just apply an exterior construction adhesive to all sides and bottom of cap, then firmly place on post and hold for 30 seconds to a minute.
