Baseboard registers, grilles and diffusers cover ductwork located along the edge of the wall in your home. These vents allow air to flow through your ducts into a room for efficient heating and cooling.
All three cover options are designed with slats that help direct air flow in a space. Without these in place, air would be expelled in one big blast and would separate — hot air rising and cool air staying low to the floor — instead of mixing together to create a comfortable environment.
Though a baseboard register, a grille and a diffuser all have slats, there are slight differences in how they function. Grilles cover the holes from duct work, and while they ensure air is pushed in a right direction, they don’t have dampers or other ways to control and change the direction of air flow. Registers feature dampers that you can adjust for air flow control or to shut off the air flow completely. A baseboard diffuser allows you to control the direction of airflow to keep the room comfortable. The diffuser's dampers face different directions to allow air to flow throughout the room, not just in one concentrated location. A volume control damper allows you to adjust the airflow as needed, giving you the ability to increase or decrease airflow depending on the room's temperature needs. As far as differences from other vent covers, since these are designed for installation into baseboards they feature a triangular back that fits securely over the duct to direct air into your space.
Their basic function aside, you’ll also want to consider other features, such as material and finish, when shopping for baseboard registers, grilles and diffusers. Baseboard vent covers feature sturdy designs, crafted of materials like steel and wood for supreme durability. Find registers available in several finishes, including white, bronze and natural wood. White registers can be painted to coordinate with your wall or baseboard color for a seamless design in the room.
