Find the Right NM-B Wire for Your Project

Non-metallic sheathed cable, or NM cable, is a commonly used indoor electrical wire. It includes two or three insulated conductors and a bare copper ground wire. This cable has a non-metallic outer sheath around the metal wires. You’ll typically find NM cable in homes and duplexes.

People often call NM wire or cable “Romex cable,” using the name of a popular brand — ROMEX SIMpull — from the wire and cable manufacturer Southwire. For example, users might refer to popular sizes of NM cable as 12/2 Romex or 14/2 Romex, even though other brands also make these cable products.

When looking for NM cable, you’ll most likely find NM-B wire. The addition of the “B” indicates the conductor insulation can withstand temperatures up to 194 degrees Fahrenheit, or 90 degrees Celsius. NM-B wiring is used for running branch circuits from the breaker box to different switches and outlets throughout the home.

A 12/2 cable includes two insulated 12 American wire gauge (AWG) conductors to carry current, one white and one black. The third wire is a bare ground wire. A 14/2 cable has the same construction but with a smaller wire gauge. A 12-gauge wire can handle 20 amps, whereas a 14-gauge wire can only handle up to 15 amps.
