Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can you replace lamp cords?

A: Yes, you can replace lamp cords, enabling you to revive a lamp with a broken or worn cord. There are many types of lamp cords — with varying lengths, gauges, colors and plug types. You may choose to buy lamp cord by-the-foot and attach a plug yourself or purchase lamp cord that comes with a plug. Consider whether the original plug is polarized. In polarized plugs, the prong that connects to the neutral wire is larger than the one that connects to the hot wire. Also, consider the number of prongs. The replacement plug should have the same types of prongs and the same configuration.

To replace a lamp cord, begin with the lamp upright. Unplug the lamp, then remove the lamp shade and light bulb. Also remove the harp, which is the wire piece that supports the lamp shade, and the lamp socket. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the switch from the cord on both sides and untie the old cord. Then, with the lamp on its side, pull the old cord out through the bottom. Feed in the replacement lamp cord from the bottom to the top, pull the two wires apart and tie a loose knot to keep the cord from pulling through. Then, screw in one wire on each side.

Working with electrical wiring requires extreme caution. To stay safe, always unplug electrical devices before doing any work on them, follow manufacturers’ safety guidelines and wear protective equipment.

Q: What type of wire do lamps use?

A: Lamp wire is usually 18/2, with 18 representing the thickness, or gauge, and 2 indicating the number of wires. If an 18-gauge wire produces a voltage drop — which comes across as a loss of electricity and dim light — you may need a 16- or 14-gauge wire.
