Using Armored Electrical Cable


Armored cable, which many people also call BX cable or BX wire, is an insulated wire that has been used in residential application for decades. Today, you’ll more likely find this metal-clad wiring in industrial and commercial applications due to the protection and durability its metal covering provides.


Armored electrical cable also is corrosion-resistant, making it usable in moisture-prone areas. Unlike rigid electrical conduit, this sheathed cable is flexible and doesn’t require special tools or bending to install. BX cable can also be used as an underground electrical wire, thanks to its metal covering.


Another kind of metal-clad cable is called MC cable. This cable and BX cable look alike from the outside. But while both have a metal sheath, the two differ in an important way. BX cable has just two wires inside — black and white power lines without a green ground wire. MC cable includes the green ground wire, making it a better choice for today’s electrical installations.
