Horrible design!!
This may work where the gate is flush with the retaining wall. However, most all gates are not flush and set in to the retaining wall. This design is extremely difficult to use in that situation because there is no way to rotate the giant nut on the top to tighten the spring. I'm in the gate business and this spring is an extremely disappointing poor design from Stanley. I've seen many bruised and bloodied knuckles on homeowners who have had to fight this stupid thing.
11" Black Powder Coat Gate Spring
Sorry to say that the first one delivered to me was defective in that I could not get it to fit gate post and selected position on gate. It was locked in position and would not turn. Thanks to Lowes, when I returned item to store I was given a replacement which worked perfectly. My gate is narrow - 3 - 4 feet; when spring was attached, it worked perfectly. As stated above, I would recommend the good spring to my friends and relatives; just make sure you check the item before leaving the store ma...

Easy to install. Strong spring for heavy gates.
Installed after our dog kept getting out of our back yard. Was a breeze to install this spring on our yard fence. Spring torque can be adjusted to match heaviness of particular gate so it doesn't slam shut.

Gate spring
Gate spring is excellent, keeps gate closed, does the job for me!

Works Great
Easy to install and closes 36" wide gate with no problems. In this installation a spacer was needed so the spring would align with the gate post. A short section of wood was attached to space out gate board so the spring would align. Entire process took less than twenty minutes. See Pix.

Works well, easy to install
This is a very unobtrusive gate closure solution. You wouldn't know it was there except the gate closes by itself. My gate is a light one so only needed the first tension "notch" but it seems plenty strong for heavier gates. It's only been installed a couple of weeks so I can't say how well it holds up over time but the powder coat finish looks like it should last.

Spring tension difficult to adjust
Instructions did not specify what size open end wrench would be required to set the tension of the spring. I'm sure the average homeowner does not have a 1" open end wrench which is what is required. I attempted to make the adjustment with a crescent wrench that did not work well as the jaws were too thick not allowing a subsequent tightening.
MAYBE I JUST GOT A BAD ONE?
INSTALLED SPRING AS PER PACKAGE DIRECTIONS. HAD TO AJUST SPRING AND WHILE AJUSTING SPRING SOMETHING SNAPED. I INSTALLED SPRING STRAIGHT UP AND DOWN AS SHOWN IN DIRECTIONS. THE 4TH TIME I OPENED THE GATE THE SPRING BROKE LOSE FROM THE TOP MOUNTING UNIT. CAN NOT BE FIXED IT WAS JUNK. THE END
