Needlepoint is a Chinese holly. The Chinese hollies are dioecious, with small white-green flowers in the late spring and early summer. The beautiful bright red berries appear right before Christmas providing food for birds. Needlepoint differs slightly from other Chinese hollies with the slightly narrow, twisted leaves with a single spine at the tip. The upright growth habit allows it to be a medium to medium-large hedge. It has a medium growth rate and reaches a mature height of about 8-12 feet with a spread of 10-12 feet. Once established, it is heat and drought tolerant. It grows best in full sun with moist, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic.
