The website showed the item that I wanted. I ordered it and drove all the way to the store to find out that they gave me the wrong item and that they were out of stock of the item that I ordered.

Polyurethane worked great.
Applied polyurethane to the railing with a rag, applied a thin layer and left it over night to dry. Then applied another thin layer the next day. Did several coats to make sure there was plenty of coverage, the gloss is nice and the multiple coats should make it durable.
