Caring for Your Waffle Maker - Cleaning - 1. Wash by hand with warm water and a little bit of soap. For extra stuck-on messes, heat water to a simmer and use a pan scraper after waffle iron has cooled. 2. Dry thoroughly with a paper towel or lint-free cloth. Some black residue from the seasoning is normal. 3. Rub a very thin layer of oil to both the inside and outside of your waffle maker and use a paper towel to wipe the excess off the surface until no oil residue remains. Using too much oil can cause the cookware to be sticky. Seasoning - While this product comes with soybean oil seasoning, we recommend seasoning it at home before each use. Seasoning is the process of baking an oil into your cast iron, so it forms a layer that makes the surface more resistant and helps keep food from sticking naturally. When your waffle maker starts to lose its nonstick properties over time (from using acidic ingredients or excess use of abrasives), be sure to clean and apply oil first (follow Cleaning steps 1-3, above) before baking. Place the disassembled waffle maker upside down on the top layer of the oven, place a baking sheet or aluminum foil on the bottom rack. Bake in the oven for 1 hour at the smoke point of the oil, between 400-500 degrees F. Allow to cool in the oven before removing. Repeat this process to achieve a better easy-release surface
