I use this mattock to remove tree, shrub and bamboo plant roots. It is very strong, The cutter comes in handy so that I don't need a separate axe. It is a bit heavy and the wood handle doesn't aborb shock but it really hold up to the tasks.

When removing tree roots, leverage is everything. I went looking for a pick axe and could only find this cutting mattock. I am very happy this is what I bought. The sharp narrow end is small but SHARP. It’s great for those last cuts to get large chunks of the roots out. The flat end is wide enough to make lots of contact with the root to be pried out.
