i buy these screws often, in multiple sizes/lengths. the reason i buy screws instead of nails is to be able to remove them if i have to do some sort of modification. i recently built a fence, and used screws to hold the fence boards to the 2x4 runners. well, i decided to raise the boards up a few inches. i removed about 60 boards, which would be 240 screws.... i tossed the first few that broke into the garbage, but decided to start saving them when i became a common occurrence. i'm thinking over...

Be aware of the size !!

These are actually #9 size and not #8. My old box of these that are labelled as #8 (and were actually #8) now scans to this same barcode and they are definitely not the same size. Yes, this goes for the Green or TAN versions. Just be aware that if you want a smaller 2" screw thickness you will have to use Deck Plus screws.

These screws worked very well on a wooden fence. You may have a 9/16" thick plank and a 1.5" thick 2x4 railing, so this size fits the bill perfectly. Replacing rusted thru deck scews

My seven y.o. deck's screws are rusted out and needed replaced w/ something BETTER. The old screws are breaking off when I try to torque them in the shrinking PT Pine decking. Lowe's sells Grip Rite Primeguard Plus coated deck screws. The carton says they have a "Lifetime guarantee against rust". I like the T-20 star drive as the grip is firm. Torx ROX

The torx bit is so much less susceptible to spinning the bit than a phillips head. Much easier to drive and to hold them on the bit. They claim the the thread has some improved design but I didnt notice that. On fence planks I often have to drive the screw, then back it out, push the plank down, and redrive it because I get a space between the plank and the stringer and the threads only make it impossible to get rid of. I use them for almost every out door wood project. From the reinforced floor frame of my new shed. To the outer wall of the 6 above ground gardens (built 2 years ago with 2.4 tons of soil in ea). Do Not Buy!

This new design increased the shaft diameter but didn't increase the thread diameter. This causes the 'teeth' of the threads to be very shallow. Due to the shallow threads there is NO gripping power into the wood. Almost every screw stripped out before pulling the boards in. Horrible design. Do not waste your money.

Best Fence Screws Ever!!!

I've used thousands of deck screws in fences, decks, and other home repair/build projects. I've always used Phillips head since I was familiar with them and had a few #2 and #3 bits. WOW was I crazy for trying to stay with the older type screws. These star type screws have a self tapping tip which make them go in easy and I built a new fence and deck (over 2000 screws) and only used 1 bit instead of about 10 bits like before. And not one head stripped out either. A++++
