DIY Decorative Wall Cabinet

Print a copy of the drilling guide and refer to it to lay out the locations of pilot holes for mounting the cabinet, support brackets, and for the decorative knobs.

Lay the cabinet and brackets on the plywood back to confirm the pilot hole locations. Remove the cabinet and bracket before drilling the pilot holes. Then countersink the pilot holes on the back of the plywood and the wall-mounting holes on the front of the plywood.

Heat a clothes iron to its highest setting. Cut four strips of edge banding about 1 inch longer than the edges and ends of the plywood panel. On one plywood edge at a time, place the end of an edge banding strip slightly overhanging the corner of the plywood and centered along its thickness. Rest the iron on the edge banding to heat the glue until it sticks to the plywood. Continue heating and pressing the edge banding against the plywood until you reach the opposite end.

Use a utility knife or sharp chisel to cut the ends of the edge banding flush with the corners of the plywood. Then slowly and carefully trim the edges of the banding even with the faces of the plywood. Sand the rest of the edge banding flush with the plywood faces. Repeat the previous step and this one for the remaining three plywood edges.

Sand the plywood panel and brackets with 120-grit and then 180-grit sandpaper; wipe clean. Paint to match the color of the cabinet (Brown Velvet shown). After the stain dries overnight, apply two coats of clear finish, sanding lightly between coats.

Lay the cabinet on a flat surface and press a bracket against the cabinet bottom with the outside edge of the flat bracket top flush with the side of the cabinet. Mark the pilot hole locations, drill, and drive screws attaching the bracket to the cabinet. Repeat for the other bracket.

Lay the cabinet and bracket assembly face down on a flat work surface. Center the plywood panel on the assembly as shown in the drilling guide and drive screws attaching the cabinet and brackets to the plywood.
