How to Mulch Planting Beds
Make sure the area is free of weeds before applying mulch. You can pull them up by hand or remove them with a garden hoe or hand weeder. Control Weeds in the Lawn and Garden will give you tips on removing weeds, both without chemicals and with the proper use of herbicides.
If you’re applying flower bed mulch or garden mulch to a planting bed you just seeded with flower seeds or vegetable plant seeds, wait for the plants to develop a bit before applying mulch. If you’re planting live plants, you can add the mulch after you plant them.
You can use landscape fabric to add additional protection against weeds sprouting from seeds in the soil, but keep in mind that it’ll reduce the nutrients that organic mulch adds to the soil. Weeds can sprout in the mulch on top of the fabric, so remove them before the roots have a chance to become entangled in the fabric.
Edging is optional, but it helps keep the mulch off of sidewalks, driveways and lawns to create a neat, manicured appearance. If you plan on using edging, it’ll be easiest to install it before you start spreading mulch. You can use landscape timbers, different styles of landscape edging or edging stones for a more architectural look. See your options for Landscape Edging Ideas in our guide.
You’ll typically install landscape timbers by driving spikes through pilot holes you drill in the timbers. Landscape edging often comes in rolls, and you simply unroll it and pin or stake it in place. If using edging stones, they’re simple to install. If you have a large bed or several beds to mulch, you may want a wheelbarrow and a shovel or bedding fork. A yard cart or dump cart for a riding mower makes hauling the mulch even easier. Spread the mulch to the desired depth with a garden rake. For small
areas, such as along a walkway or around a mailbox, you can spread it by hand or with a garden trowel.
Work the mulch to the desired depth and pull it back from the plants so it isn’t touching the stems or leaves. Contact with plants can lead to problems with pests and diseases. If you’re mulching beds around your house, keep the mulch back several inches from the foundation.
Lightly water the mulch to help it settle in place. Allow colored mulch to dry for a day or two before watering.

Reduced Quality
I have purchased this mulch for several years. Last year I noticed a little less quality in some of the bags. I must express significant concern regarding the quality of the mulch I recently received. Disappointed. Poorest Mulch in 15 Years
I have been using brown mulch for color , moisture and weed for 15 years. A lot of that has come from Lowes during their Memorial Day sale and it has been acceptable product. This year's quality is different for the following reasons. 1. The brown color is closer to faded black and gray than brown. 2. Cheap, sticky mulch
Got these on sale for $2.50 a bag. It's a really great value and convenient when I don't need a whole scoop of mulch but just a couple bags to cover our flower beds. Bought this mulch two separate times this year and the first set of five bags I got was very stinky. The smell lingered in my car and it is probably a month ago and I can still kind of smell it a little bit even after baking soda and everything. But the next set of bags I needed seven more those smelled normal again. So I don't know...

Poor quality control
I got 6 bags of brown from one Lowe's and 10 bags of brown from a different Lowe's in the sale period. The 6 bags were normal quality and good color. The 10 bag lot all had the same lot # and were terrible. Large chunks of wood with blackish color, so poor coverage. Also contained lots of rocks, green plastic and large steel deck bolts. Some pressure treated wood chunks had no color. It looks like chopped up old decks and fences. After a while, the color is almost black.

late delivery
The product itself was very good and exactly what I expected. Quality was great and I’m happy with the purchase overall. Unfortunately, the delivery experience was frustrating. The driver passed my house and continued toward the beach on a busy summer Friday, which delayed the delivery significantly. Because of the delay, I had to rearrange and postpone other plans just to wait for the package to arrive. Great product, but the delivery process definitely needs improvement.

This doesn’t deserve even 1 star. Have purchased hundreds & hundreds bags of mulch over the last 50 yrs & never have I purchased anything so terrible as this brand.
