Step-by-Step Instructions Select and Prepare the Site Choose a flat area in your yard for the garden bed. Clear the site of grass, rocks, and debris. Plan the Layout Use the tape measure to mark out a 45-inch by 99-inch rectangular area. Create the Base (if not building atop an existing footer or patio) Dig a trench around the marked area, approximately 4 inches deep and 9 inches wide.
