Minwax Minwax Solid Tinsmith Gray Water-Based Stain

Excellent prep product

Absorbed quickly, was easy to apply with a cloth, and readily accepted the follow up stain and sealer.

I liked the end product

I actually don’t know if this product helped.i didnt try with and without it. But I did use this after sanding my tongue and groove boards with150 then 240 grit. I didn’t realize until I was towards the end of applying pre stain to many pine boards that you were supposed to stain pretty much right way. I didn’t. The next day I stained with Minwax whitewash stain and they came out great!

A must pre-treatment before staining or dying wood

It worked incredibly well and gave me a much better, more uniform dying of the wood. I was using TransTint dye rather than stain on birch plywood.

Thought this was helpful but I was staying in Pine

I didn't have the the best success with this but I know it's a good product

High quality Minwax product.

Absolute must for water-based stain

Used this to prestain a faux live edge fireplace mantel I made from a standard yellow pine 2x12. I first tested the water-based stain without pre treating and it was a mess. Sure as advertised, using the pre stain stopped the patchy and uneven absorbtion and gave a beautiful, consistent finish. I will always pretreat now before staining.

Conditioner Great for Water-Based Stains

Worked well to use before applying a water-based stain from Minwax. Easy to use, and seemed thinner than the oil-based stains/conditioners I'm used to, but to be expected as a water-based conditioner.

Dries to fast.

Very difficult to apply. Dries too fast.
