Choose your block. We’re building this planting bed using trapezoidal retaining wall block. We’ll use construction adhesive to help secure the individual blocks in place.
Before you begin building:
- Call 811 to have utilities marked in the area before you begin digging.
- Check with your Homeowners Association to see if you need to have your project approved.
- Plan the size and layout of your bed. Adapt the look of the bed in your Lowe’s store to fit your space. For example, with this project we’re planting a corner at the foot of a driveway, so there's not room for an actual semi-circle layout.
- Use the calculator on the product page to estimate how many blocks you need, including an extra 10% to 15% to account for cutting blocks, future repairs, etc.
- As with the blocks, you can use the calculator on the Lowes.com product page to create an estimate of the amount of drainage material and mulch you need.
- Use our soil calculator to estimate how much raised bed soil you need for your project.
Mark the layout of the bed. You can lay out the design using a garden hose, which works well for curves. If you want an accurate partial circle, you can make a quick compass. Drive a landscape stake at the center of your layout and tie a string between the stake and a can of marking paint. Pull the string taut and spray the marking paint to create your layout line.
Dig up and remove the turf from the bed area.
Using the layout marks on the ground as a reference, dig a trench 4 inches deep in the shape of the planting bed. Adjust the depth as needed to account for any slope in the ground. Remove the loose soil and compact the bottom of the trench with a hand tamper. Check for level, adding and removing soil as necessary and tamping the bottom of the trench firm.
Add a couple of inches of all-purpose gravel or paver base to the bottom of the trench. Spread the material evenly with a garden rake. Tamp and repeat to get a level base compacted to a depth of 4 inches. A firm, level base is key for building the walls of your raised bed.
Begin placing the first row of blocks. Check for level as you go, side to side and front to back. Add a bit of paver base to raise a block as necessary or tap it with a rubber mallet to lower it. A level first row makes the remaining rows easier to build.
You might need to cut a few blocks at some point to fit your layout. You can use a rafter/speed square, a chisel and a small sledgehammer to mark and cut a few blocks. It’s a good idea to practice on a spare block. If you have many to cut, you might want to use a power saw. See our article, How to Cut Bricks, Patio Blocks and Pavers, for step-by-step instructions. Take safety precautions when cutting stones. If using a hammer and chisel, you need safety glasses and work gloves. If using a power saw, you need hearing protection, safety glasses and a respirator.
Once you have the first row of blocks down, wipe away any dust with a hand broom or deck brush.
Begin laying the second row of blocks. Apply adhesive to the top of the first row as you lay each block. Stagger the joints on the rows so a block spans a joint in the row below. You might need to begin the second row with a partial block. Check for level as you go and press each block firmly into the adhesive to create a strong bond. Brush away any debris once complete.
Apply adhesive and lay the third and final row. Backfill around the first layer of block with gravel as necessary to allow drainage and tamp down. Top with soil.
Now you’re ready to plant your semi-circle bed. Fill the bed with premixed raised bed soil and make it easy to give your plants the soil they need for a good start. Consider using landscape fabric to block weeds. Add your plants. A mix of shrubs, bright annuals and long-lasting perennials is a good choice. Finish with a layer of mulch to help retain moisture in the soil, but pull the mulch back an inch or so from the plant stems and two or three inches from the tree trunk.

Great for garden and flower beds
I have purchased a few hundred of these blocks to build both flower and garden beds. They are heavy and with just a little glue, have withstand the outside Ohio temps for over 3 years and going.

I'm a double amputee who lives on a very steep piece of land. The 2 delivery guys rolled up in a car and tossed the blocks into the yard on the hill. Not on the flat street. I ordered 10 blocks in color Sandhill 4.0-in H x 11.2-in L x 6.0-in D Flagstone Sand hill Concrete Retaining wall block. Those were loaded onto my vehicle and I did not see them until I got home. Imagine my surprise when I started downloading them and 4 out of 10 were a different color (reddish with charcoal streaks).
