Why IRWIN?

The history of IRWIN Tools stretches back more than a century. In 1884 a blacksmith in Martinsville, Ohio, had an idea for a solid center auger bit. He sold the rights to his pharmacist, Charles Irwin, who received a patent for it a year later and opened the IRWIN Auger Bit Company. Nearly four decades later, William Peterson invented the first locking pliers in his blacksmith shop. He patented his new idea and called it VISE-GRIP. In 1993 Peterson’s company, known then as American Tool, acquired the IRWIN Tool Company, and an industry giant was born. This growth strategy, which combines innovation and acquisition, has made IRWIN Industrial Tools a worldwide leading manufacturer of tools for professionals.
