Run, do not walk, AWAY from ANY AO Smith Signature

These are complete garbage. I'm in the doghouse with the Mrs. for suggesting this heater and now we have stinky water. AO Smith "support" is not helpful at all and refuses to do anything. Once the immediate issue is resolved I will be reporting them to the Maine AG's office.

Efficient Heat Pump water heater now quieter

The AOWhite heat pump water heater was easy to order once I figured out exactly what I wanted, and delivery was prompt and as expected. We have had a heat pump water heater for 14 years and liked its efficiency so we got this one when the old one started to ooze water. This one is quieter but the sound is very different from previous heat pump. Instead of sounding like a big fan it sounds more like perhaps something cooking on the stove. Waterheater Replacement

This unit purchased was very similar to the unit being replaced, and was the last waterheater of its type in this particular store. Made life so much easier to install.

Garbage

This is a replacement for an older AOSMITH hybrid that only lasted 4 years barely. This new one was installed June 2024 and the heat pump compressor has already malfunctioned. Not even remotely worth the price at all. Complete garbage product. This brand isn't worth a penny..

This unit WILL die on you.

Had my first unit for a couple years before the heat pump died. Got a replacement from Lowes after much frustration and wasted money due to plumber costs. New unit made it 9 months and died again, and I'm in the same boat. This is a terrible unit with a heat pump that really is terrible. I'll never buy an A.O.Smith product again. Shame on you. Look at all these reviews saying the same thing. Your engineers are asleep at the wheel.

Just use eletric, the heat pumps are defective

My A.O. Smith 80 Gallon Hybrid heat pump is just an standard electric hot water heater after less then two years. A.O. Smith says I can return the unit to Lowes for a replacement. The cost to have a 300lbs pound water heater removed from my basement, swapped at Lowes and then re-installed is way more than the heat pump will save in the next 10 years. Poor quality and poor customer service

We professional installed 11/28/23, all worked great in Hybrid mode and Heat pump mode for 7 months, then warm water one day. Looked at app and 2 of of the 3 bars that show temp of water were blue. I went and looked at water heater and the fans were running. I thought this was odd since it was early and no one had been using that much hot water over night. Checked on it 3 hours later the same. Do not buy. Purchased this water heater October of last year. Delivered to my house and got it installed. Failed in about 9 months due to its compressor. This model is defective and AO Smith and Lowe’s knows it. Manufacturer warranty is used less and they will only replace it and have you pay the difference At Lowe’s and Lowe’s won’t issue a refund. Heat Pump Dead

It appears there are two types of AO Smith Heat Pump Water Heater customers: Those whose heat pump failed, and those whose heat pump will fail, they just don't know it. My heat pump failed after 13 months, just out of labor warranty, so will have to disconnect, drain, haul, return, haul, reconnect myself. What a pain.

I love its heat pump efficiency as well as the ability to direct it into high-performance gear. Do not buy this water heater

After about 1.5 years of use the heat pump started running constantly, and then I got the ECC code. With a quick call to tech support and some basic troubleshooting I was given a RA number and instructions to return to Lowes. This is where bad went to worse. Replaced GE GeoSpring heat pump water heater with this, Runs quieter has options for water inlets. Only negative is that the owners manual is not much help. especially with anode.

Originally purchased and installed by professional in March 2023. Stopped operating in heat pump mode in October 2023. Replaced motherboard. Didn’t fix. AO Smith replaced unit. Main issue to look out for is that the heat pump on this water heater breaks a lot and AO Smith does not cover any of the labor costs to address that. I had my tank installed in Dec 2020 and the heat pump temp sensor was broken right out of the box. AO Smith sent a replacement part for free, but the labor costs added a few hundred dollars to the price from day one. Within 18mo or so the same internal part failed again.
