I would like to put bladder tank above the hot water tank. How much space do i need to leave above the heater??

But is a bladder tank necessary? What benefit would the bladder tank provide?

Expansion tanks (bladder tanks) typically require at least 12 inches of space. There must be at least 6 inches of unobstructed space above the water heater for outflow of the fan, meaning you would need at least 18 inches of clearance from the top of the heater to accommodate an expansion tank. If you do not have this space above the water heater, piping can be used to reach the expansion tank. It is recommended not to exceed 3 feet of piping between the water heater and the expansion tank.
