Can this be used around trees, or do I need to keep it away from the trunk of the tree

You should always be able to see the root flare at the base of the tree. Keep mulch a minimum of one inch or more from the tree bark to avoid problems with rot and disease. Feeder roots are in the top 8-12 inches of soil. Spread no more than 2-3 inches of mulch so the tree can get needed oxygen.
Was this Answer Helpful ?You should keep mulch from touching the trunk of trees and bushes. When touching the trunk, wet mulch causes the trunk bark to rot away.

Was this Answer Helpful ?I have to keep it away from the trunks of palm trees... I got that from books on them ... so probably makes sense not to but the best thing to do is look up the species of tree on line and you will most likely fine the recommendation on its care.
Was this Answer Helpful ?Nothing toxic is in the mulch to kill a tree or bush. However, some plants do not like mulch, dirt, or anything built up around the roots, so I would keep a little space between the mulch and bottom trunk/roots of the tree just in case. I know my 800 plus year old cypress trees, do not mind, but my crepe myrtles seem to not thrive as well with the mulch pilled up around them do I give those trunks/roots and little more breathing space.
