Gutter screens help keep large debris, like leaves and twigs, out of your home’s gutters. There are several types of gutter screens that attach under roof shingles, snap into gutters or are fastened with screws. Gutter protection systems include gutter screens, gutter covers, leaf guards and gutter fillers. The following instructions are for installing simple, snap-in, wire mesh gutter screens, but other gutter screen installations are similar.
Before selecting a gutter protection product, inspect your home’s gutters to determine what type of debris it now collects. Leaves and twigs are relatively easy to stop, but tree or flower buds, evergreen needles and seeds can slip through many gutter screens.
Select an appropriate ladder. Use a step ladder if possible. For a two-story home, you may need an extension ladder.
For all ladders, make sure that the legs are set on a solid, level surface.
Measure each gutter separately (width x depth x length).
Also consider the pitch (angle) of your home’s roof as higher-pitch roofs have faster runoff that may miss a shallow gutter in a downpour.
If you live in an area that gets heavy snow, consider how gutter screens will be impacted by snow and ice buildup. Take this information to Lowe’s, where an associate can help you select the appropriate product for your home and budget.
Before you install the screens, thoroughly clean and repair your home’s gutters.
Refer to the gutter protection system manufacturer’s instructions for specific steps. Common gutter screens simply snap into place as follows.
If you live in a high wind area, fasten the screens to the gutters with sheet metal screws.
Maintain your gutter screens. Every spring and fall, inspect your gutters to determine if the gutter screens are blocked or damaged. Remove and clean as needed.
