Store Christmas Decorations

Use our easy tips for storing your Christmas ornaments and lights in an organized manner, so decorating next year will be a snap.

mantle decorated with greenery

  • Use boxes with dividers that will hold multiple ornaments. Look for adjustable dividers to accommodate tall ornaments.
  • If your ornaments go in an attic, basement or garage, use plastic containers that are airtight and moisture-resistant.
  • Add mothballs or cedar blocks to your storage bins to prevent insect infestation.
  • Protect breakable ornaments by wrapping them in tissue paper, newspaper or pieces of felt.
  • If you decorate multiple trees, put ornaments in separate boxes and label them.

  • As you take down each strand, replace any burned-out or broken bulbs. Throw away strings with broken or frayed cords.
  • To make decorating easier next year, label each strand with a sticker or electrical tape, noting where you used the lights.
  • To prevent tangling, wrap each strand around a piece of cardboard or PVC pipe and place each one into its own plastic bag.

Artificial Trees

  • Put the pieces in a canvas tree bag or a plastic tree storage box. Look for one with carrying handles and wheels for easy transport.
  • Or if you have room, slip a plastic tree bag over a fully assembled tree and store it upright.

Wreaths, Inflatables and Outdoor Displays

  • Replace burned-out or broken bulbs. Wind cords into loops and secure them with cable ties.
  • Place each item in a plastic or canvas bag. Look for styles specially designed to hold wreaths and other large items.
  • Label the bag and hang items on hooks in your closet or garage.

Storage for Small Spaces

If you live in an apartment, condo or a small home, storage is at a premium. To ensure you still have a festive look without compromising precious square footage, consider these tips:

  • Rely on greenery. Buy a live tree, fresh garland for your stairs and mantel, and add a wreath to your door. Then when the season is over, you can discard rather than store them.
  • Use underbed boxes to store your holiday treasures. Or place plastic totes on ceiling-mounted racks to store Christmas items in the garage.
  • Buy special holiday storage bins for ornaments and tuck into the recesses of your closet.
  • If you have an artificial wreath, cover it in a wreath bag and hang on the wall in a closet or garage.
