Dig a 24-inch-by-24-inch hole 6 inches deep. The first course is buried in order to provide greater stability. You could also sit the blocks directly on the patio. With this option, skip Step 2.
Before beginning any excavation, call 811 to check for underground utilities.
Once the hole is dug and level, pour in paver base about 3 inches deep, and tamp until well compacted. Use remaining base to level the first course, and fill in around the buried course.
Lay the first course, leveling as each stone is placed.
Rotate the pattern 90 degrees for each course. Use landscape adhesive on each course if desired. Check for level after each course.
Wall block sizes vary by style and market. Use the quantity in the material list as a guide. Also, when purchasing wall block, remember that some block has an interlocking lip on the bottom for use in retaining walls, not stacked block projects.
