Find the Right Curtains for Every Room

Curtains are a simple way to soften the look of a room while providing extra privacy and light control. Often an overlooked detail, curtains can significantly impact a room’s style and comfort level. There are a variety of curtain design possibilities to choose from, some being better options for specific rooms. Below, we discuss the various curtain types, styles and lengths so you can make an informed decision about which ones will best complement your home.

Things to Consider
Before deciding on curtains, you should consider how much light a room gets. If it’s a room that’s getting too much sunlight, you may want to consider light-blocking curtains, also known as blackout shades. These heavier drapes will keep your room dark, no matter the time of day. They’re a great choice for bedrooms, media rooms and nurseries. Another thing to consider is privacy. For private rooms, like bedrooms, bathrooms and even living rooms, you may want to go with curtains made from a heavier fabric that isn’t transparent, like velvet, cotton or polyester. If you’re simply adding curtains to a window for extra style, you can opt for a sheer curtain or semi-sheer option.

Curtain Length
Curtain length varies and should be chosen based on preference. There are four main types: sill, apron, floor and puddle. Sill-length curtains are the shortest and reach just the top of the windowsill. They’re typically used in areas with small windows. Apron-length curtains are a little longer than sill length and hit 4 to 6 inches below the window frame. Floor-length curtains brush the floor, as their name suggests. Puddle-effect curtains are the longest option. They offer a sophisticated look but should be reserved for rooms where pets and children won’t run over them and ruin the fabric.
