Flush in Style With a Toilet Handle

When you push down on a toilet handle, it raises the trip lever and chain, which lifts the flush ball, ultimately letting the water from your toilet tank flow into the bowl. A loose or broken toilet flush handle is a common problem, but you don't necessarily need to call in a professional plumber to fix it. A toilet handle replacement is an easy job, even for those who are fairly new to do-it-yourself projects.

Toilet flush handles can be front-mounted or side-mounted. If your handle is perpendicular to the wall behind your toilet, you'll need a side-mounted toilet handle replacement. With so many types of toilets out there, handles come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and materials such as brass or plastic. To ensure your toilet gets the correct refill after each flush, the best way to find a compatible part is to take off the old handle. Many replacements include a lever as well.

For helpful tips on fixing common toilet problems, be sure to read our how-to guide — Common Toilet Problems — which covers the basics including issues with a loose toilet handle, a constantly running toilet, a leaky toilet and more.
