Many of us enjoy planting and growing flowers, greenery and vegetables. Not only can they provide color and texture indoors and out, but they also give us a sense of accomplishment when we succeed at growing healthy plants. Every plant deserves a good home, so Lowe’s is here to help you grow your vegetation in the best plant container for your needs.
People often ask about the difference between garden pots and planters. They’re similar in that both can hold plants, but each has somewhat distinct properties for use. For example, a pot is usually round and made of earthenware and doesn’t include drainage holes. Although plants can grow in pots, it might help to think of plant pots and flower pots as containers primarily for displaying plants as opposed to growing them.
By contrast, planters are typically rectangular, like a planter box, but they also come in other shapes and sizes. In addition, planters usually include either predrilled or knockout drainage holes.
Once you’ve decided on your container type, you’ll need to consider what size to use. Figure in the current size of your plant, how large it may grow and how much water it’ll need to stay healthy. If you’re currently using a container that’s 10 inches wide or smaller, the best practice is to transplant the plant into a container that’s 1 to 2 inches larger than the original container. If your current container is wider than 10 inches, move your plant into a container that’s 2 to 3 inches larger. Containers that are too small may allow soil to dry out too quickly and prevent root growth.
Outdoor planters and indoor planters come in plastic, concrete, fiberglass, wood, and ceramic among other materials. Ceramic pots help hold water, which can ensure your plants thrive in extremely hot weather. A wood or resin half-barrel can be a great container for large plants or multiple flowers. Containers made of copper or galvanized metal are also popular choices for plants, but these types of containers may work better as indoor plant pots since metals absorb heat. Also, it’s best to avoid dark-colored containers if your plant is in a very sunny location, as it may get too hot.
Large pottery planters for house plants, indoor trees, succulents and outdoor greenery can be great additions to your décor. And many planters carry ratings for either indoor or outdoor use. Outdoor large planter pots are versatile enough for both small plants and large trees. You can use plastic grocery bags, crushed cans, rocks or wood chips as filler to keep from having to fill tall outdoor planters with potting soil.
If you want something ready to use around your porch or patio, a hanging planter basket with an incorporated hook may fit your needs. Lowe’s has hanging planters for walls made of resin or metal, among other options, that you can fill with your own flowers. Moss and coconut fiber liners will help give metal baskets a more natural look. Wall-hanging planters are a great way to display your foliage indoors and out. Both planter types can be quite heavy, so make sure you have the right hardware installed to support the weight.
Whether you need hanging planters, plants or seeds, Lowe’s has everything for your garden. There are even self-watering planters for gardeners who are short on time or fear they’ll forget to water. You can shop for planters with stands to display your containers, as well as window boxes, deck planter boxes and rail planters to add color to your outside spaces.
