PVC DWV pipe is a lightweight polyvinyl chloride pipe that has thinner
walls than schedule 40 PVC pipes, and therefore should only be used in
non-pressurized applications. DWV pipe is specifically for drainage, waste and
venting purposes, but can be used in various other household applications, too.
DWV pipe is used in above-ground plumbing in buildings and in
underground sewer drainage, all of which use gravity to facilitate the flow of
water through the pipes. DWV fittings come in various styles including p-traps,
junctions and bends. They're available in different diameters and they're
resistant to root penetration, so they're ideal for underground use.
You don't need special tools to cut
through DWV pipe because the walls of the pipe are relatively thin — a handsaw
will do just fine if you don't have a PVC cutter. For tips, see our guide — How
to Install PVC and ABS Pipes and Fittings.
