Prepare for Planting With an Electric Cultivator
Use an electric cultivator to clean up your flower bed or garden between planting seasons. These tools easily remove weeds and loosen up the soil to prepare for planting. Cultivators are like soil tillers in that they feature spinning blades that dig into the soil. But where tillers are used to break up hard, compacted soil, cultivators are smaller and meant to loosen already broken-up soil to remove weeds or mix in compost or other soil additives.
There are different types of soil cultivator models. Smaller models, with a narrow width and shallow tilling depth, are perfect for removing weeds and grass that spring up between rows of plants. Other cultivators are larger and have a tilling depth of up to 10 inches, so you can mix in compost. Some electric cultivators require an extension cord while running. Another option is a cordless cultivator that runs off a rechargeable battery.
There are also gas-powered cultivators and manual cultivators that you push along the soil. For help choosing which cultivator is right for your purposes, see our Cultivators and Tillers Buying Guide.
