Orbit   Black Replacement Solenoid

Solenoids open and close automatic irrigation valves. They operate via a 24V electrical connection to an irrigation controller. When electricity flows from the controller to the solenoid, a small steel rod inside of the solenoid lifts off a bleed hole, allowing the valve diaphragm to open and water to flow through the valve. These replacement solenoids are for 24V irrigation valves. They have a stainless steel rod, copper core, insulated lead wires, and a waterproof resin casing which protects the internal components. Interchangeability of 24V solenoids depends on the footprint. See compatibility chart in the images. While it is relatively rare for a solenoid to fail, replacement is very straightforward. Simply turn the water mainline off, remove the waterproof nuts from the wires of the existing solenoid, unthread the solenoid from the valve, thread the new solenoid into the valve, connect the solenoid wires with new waterproof wire nuts, and turn the water mainline back on. For outdoor irrigation use with cold water only.

Your sprinkler system represents an important investment. Whenever water comes in contact with metal and electricity, there is potential for corrosion. The risk is highest on DC Voltage systems, like some 2-wire irrigation controllers, but it can still be a risk for standard 24 VAC irrigation and landscape controllers. Easy Seal waterproof wire connectors and direct burial grease tubes (also known as “grease caps”) are a smart way to protect your investment. Easy Seal waterproof wire connectors are ideal for 24 VAC solenoids in valve boxes, while grease tubes are ideal for 2-wire and direct burial applications. Typical installation of Easy Seal connectors is to directly push the solenoid and sprinkler controller wire into the cap and twist it. You should not reuse waterproof wire connectors. Typical installation for the grease tube is to push the decoder and solenoid wire into the wire nut, twist it, insert the wire nut all the way into the tube, and lock the lid into place. Note: Turn off power before installing or removing waterproof wire connectors. For use in accordance with local and national codes only.

They are constructed from durable materials which ensure reliable operation in a wide range of water conditions. Occasionally debris can get stuck under a diaphragm, or the diaphragm can develop a tear, necessitating cleaning or replacement. This entails removing the top part of the valve and inspecting the flexible diaphragm. The table in the images identifies which replacement diaphragm fits each valve. Be sure to place the valve spring on top of the diaphragm before you reinstall the valve top. For outdoor irrigation use with cold water only.
